One of the many obstacles that women face in becoming engineers is the perception that engineering is traditionally a "male" field. Many women who want to pursue engineering at the university level report that they are discouraged by their professors, whereas going into a biomedical field -- to become a doctor or medical researcher, for example -- is more widely accepted.

Look carefully at the attached chart of PhD (advanced doctorate) degrees earned in biomedical fields vs. engineering fields. A chart like this is called a "frequency table." Do you see evidence of discrimination here? Explain!

For this team test, you may choose the group you work with! Groups of 2, 3 or maximum 4 are OK -- or you may choose to work on this assignment on your own. Designate one person in the group as your coordinator, and have them make a copy of the test for you to work on. Besides completing your test corrections, please use one (or both) of these two activities to practice working with slope and y-intercept.
- Green Globs: Open the "Lines" section on the left, and write equations to intersect as many "green globs" as possible.
- "Line Game": There are three types of problems -- ones where you adjust a line to match an equation, another where you adjust the equation to match the line, and another where you line up three points to match the equation.

"Line Game" also includes equations in "point-slope" format. Either skip these by clicking "check" repeatedly, or learn a little bit about that type of equation in Khan Academy (see link below).

Practice for 20 minutes and post a screen shot of your best score!

I need your input about how we should do chapter tests. I want to give you as much feedback as possible so you can learn everything you are supposed to learn this year.

Usually, we do this through our team and individual tests, test corrections, and homework answers. However, we obviously have to make some adjustments for our new learning situation! Please let me know how you think we should do our evaluations so that: a) you are able to demonstrate your learning in a fair and appropriate way, and b) I can give you the feedback you need to learn the material well.

Some options I'm considering:
- "Feedback only" tests & quizzes --- we would take an online evaluation, but I would only provide comments and feedback. Your grade on the test would only be for completing it, not how much you got correct.
- Traditional tests in online form -- we turn the usual tests into a Google Form, and you are graded according to number of questions correct.
- Short 1- or 2-question quizzes each day to see how you are doing with each lesson
- Alternative assessments - individual students (or teams of 2-3) create video presentations, slides, etc., about what they've learned (an example might be Flipgrid videos)
- Or maybe we don't even worry about tests, and just focus on homework?
