El Rancho Unified School District’s governing Board took historic action on the evening of May 13, 2014 to approve the creation of their first middle school STEAM Academy beginning in the 2014-15 school year.
Located at 8101 Orange Avenue in Pico Rivera, the STEAM Academy at Burke Middle School will be a full-service community school for students in grades 6-8. STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics - is the broad umbrella for how the curriculum in this new and innovative program is organized. Students will tackle middle school concepts while incorporating the 4 Cs of 21st Century learning – critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, all through the STEAM lens of authentic, project-based instruction. Sample elective course offerings will include Engineering and Robotics, Computer Programming, Digital Imaging, Music Production, Choir, Jazz Band, and Environmental Studies.
Current Burke Middle School and resident students are guaranteed seats in the STEAM Academy, and a minimum of 50 additional spaces will be available to other families living in Pico Rivera and surrounding neighborhoods. If more than 50 applicants are eligible for attendance, a lottery will be conducted for placement.
Student enrollment applications are now available for grades 6-8. An application form, teacher recommendation, 2013 CST scores, and final 2014 student report card are required. Please send to:
