PBL, short for Project Based Learning, is a teaching method through which students gain knowledge and skills by investigating and responding to a challenging question, problem, or challenge. We call this the “driving question” because it is what “drives” the students’ investigation and research throughout the project. The driving question is always at an appropriate level of challenge and is applicable in the real world. As students investigate and research the problem at hand, they learn standards based content and skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Students are also encouraged to be creative as they design the projects that will answer their driving question.
At the STEAM Academy, we use PBL as a method for bringing all of the elements of STEAM together for our students. As students design their projects, they are using Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. By providing a STEAM education that is driven by PBL to our students, we know we are preparing them to be college and career ready.
